What should blood sugar levels be in the morning?

Blood sugar levels fluctuate often and it is not unusual to see highs and lows throughout the day. According to Diabetes Canada, your blood glucose levels target may be around 4.0 to 7.0 millimoles per litre (mmol/L) before a meal or if you are fasting. Two hours after meals, a range of 5.0 to 10.0 mmol/L is normal. If A1C targets are not being met, your target may be in the range of 5.0 to 8.0 mmol/L.1
Morning glucose levels may be a bit lower as your body has been fasting during sleep and your activity levels are low. After eating breakfast, you’ll generally see your glucose levels rise back in range.* If this is not the case, contact your doctor and get recommendations on how to get back into your target range.
*Speak to your doctor about determining your recommended range.
