Dexcom G7 vs. Dexcom G6: Advancements in Diabetes Technology

Advanced technology in Dexcom G7 improves on the innovation in Dexcom G6. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two CGM systems.
The new Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System is the next generation of diabetes technology. Dexcom G7 combines the power of its predecessor, the Dexcom G6 CGM System, with some new groundbreaking innovations.
Dexcom G7 is a great option for adults and children living with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes, including current Dexcom G6 users and those who are new to using CGM to manage diabetes. The Dexcom G7 System is designed to support as many people as possible and is the only CGM system on the market that’s approved for children as young as two years old and for use during pregnancy. Exploring the differences between Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7 can help you make an informed decision about which system is right for you.
Evolution of Dexcom CGM
CGM innovation is at the core of Dexcom’s DNA. In 2015, Dexcom launched the Dexcom G5 Mobile, the first CGM system that allowed people to view their glucose data directly on their smart devices. It was also the first CGM system to be approved as a replacement for regular fingerstick glucose testing.
Dexcom went on to develop Dexcom G6, which was much smaller, easier to use, and more comfortable to insert and wear. Always at the forefront of diabetes innovation, Dexcom G6 was the first CGM system for integration with insulin devices—launching automated insulin delivery (AID) systems into the market and pushing technology towards the possibility of an artificial pancreas.
Dexcom G7 is the latest effort to provide cutting-edge technology that makes glucose monitoring simpler and more accessible to everyone living with diabetes. Dexcom G7 is the most accurate CGM system available and includes a more discreet sensor, 60 percent smaller than the Dexcom G6 sensor.† 1,2 The completely redesigned Dexcom G7 app provides an unparalleled user experience so it’s simpler than ever to understand where your glucose is at and where it’s headed.

Comparing Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7

Dexcom G7 takes the technology in Dexcom G6 to the next level. Both CGM systems can help make glucose monitoring and management easier, but Dexcom G7 is the most advanced system that offers a more user-friendly experience. Thanks to input from the community of Dexcom G6 customers, Dexcom G7 is designed around the people who manage diabetes with CGM day in and day out.

New Features and Advancements in Dexcom G7

Dexcom G7 includes some notable advancements in CGM technology as well as updates to the app and glucose alerts. The system has several features that Dexcom G6 doesn’t have. These improvements are designed to help make the CGM experience more comfortable, convenient, and easier than ever before. A few of the brand-new features you’ll find in Dexcom G7 include:
  • A sleek, all-in-one sensor and transmitter that’s so comfortable to wear, it’s barely noticeable.1
  • A faster sensor warmup which takes just 30 minutes and is 2x faster than any other glucose monitoring system.3
  • A 12-hour sensor change grace period at the end of 10 days of wear.
  • A waterproof sensor, so you have the freedom to sweat, bathe, and spend more time in the water without missing out on the benefits of CGM.3‡
  • The new Delay 1st Alert (High Alert only) feature will only notify you when you’ve consistently had high glucose for a predetermined period of time.
  • Children aged two to six can now wear Dexcom G7 on the back of their arm or lower abdomen in addition to their upper buttocks.
Dexcom G7 also has a new app experience that includes a fresh visual design and enhanced alerts, making it a little easier to understand what’s happening with your glucose levels. In addition to your current glucose readings, the Dexcom G7 app features a summary of Dexcom Clarity data below the glucose trend graph for more comprehensive glucose insights at a glance. There’s also a larger library of alert sounds so that you can choose which ones are most effective for you to help reduce notification fatigue.

Features in Both Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7

There are also many features from Dexcom G6 that you’ll still find in Dexcom G7. These tried-and-true features have already been tested in the real world by the community of Dexcom G6 customers. Here are some of the essential ones from Dexcom G6 that are also in Dexcom G7:
  • Both systems can take readings up to every five minutes throughout the day and while you sleep.
  • Readings are sent to a compatible smart device (which can then be shared to a smartwatch) or receiver so you can view glucose data in the palm of your hand.§
  • Customizable alerts can let you know when you’re higher or lower than your target glucose range (generally defined by Diabetes Canada as 3.9–10.0 mmol/L4).
  • The predictive Urgent Low Soon alert can let you know up to 20 minutes before you’re likely to experience a serious low under 3.1 mmol/L, giving you time to prevent lows.
  • The Urgent Low alarm can notify you when your glucose drops below 3.1 mmol/L, so you can take action to treat it.
  • Readings can be shared via the Dexcom Follow app, enabling parents, caregivers, or your circle of support to remotely monitor glucose levels.||
The separate Dexcom Clarity app connects to Dexcom G7 and allows you and your diabetes care team to view glucose data trends over days, weeks, months, and even years.

Switching from Dexcom G6 to Dexcom G7
