What does it mean to have prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a condition that a person has prior to developing type 2 diabetes. It means that blood sugar levels are higher than the normal range, but not yet high enough to be defined as diabetes. There are no clear symptoms that indicate prediabetes; however, the following test results of A1C, fasting blood glucose (FPG), and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) show prediabetes:
- A1C of 5.7% – 6.4%
- FBG of 100 – 125 mg/dl
- OGTT 2-hour blood glucose of 140 mg/dl – 199 mg/dl
