What are the recommended Dexcom G7 iPhone settings?

Your smartphone settings can prevent the Dexcom G7 app from working optimally. Your smartphone settings may prevent notifications or may override alert volumes or functions. Learn more about the settings we recommend and how to check them.
The location of each setting may be different based on your iOS version. Please refer to your smart device instructions for detailed information.* Not sure which iOS version you’re on? Find your device’s iOS version within the About section of your smartphone’s Settings.

Screen Time

The Screen Time features Downtime and App Limits options can temporarily disable apps. If you set time limits for the Dexcom G7 app, you may not open the app or get alerts or sensor readings outside of those specified time limits.
How to add Dexcom G7 to Allowed Apps
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings
  2. Tap Screen Time
  3. Turn off Downtime and App Limits, or add the Dexcom G7 app to the Always Allowed app list

Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb silences all alerts except for the Urgent Low Soon and important technical alerts. If any of your Dexcom G7 alerts are set to Sound, they should override your smartphone settings so that you can hear these alerts.
How to turn Do Not Disturb off
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb
  3. Turn it off
To allow Dexcom G7 alerts to sound during Do Not Disturb:
  1. Open your Dexcom G7 app
  2. Tap Profile
  3. Tap Alerts
  4. Choose “Sound” within each alert.

Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode may prevent the Dexcom G7 app from running in the background when you don’t have the app open and displayed on your smartphone screen. When Low Power Mode is on, alerts may be delayed. If you’re using the Share feature of the Dexcom G7 app, information sent to designated followers using the Dexcom Follow app†,‡ may also be delayed.
How to turn Low Power Mode off
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings
  2. Tap Battery
  3. Turn off Low Power Mode

Optimized Battery Charging

The optimized battery charging setting can cause apps to shut down during the time that the phone Is charging. When the Dexcom G7 app Is shut down, you will not get any notifications or alerts.
How to turn Optimized Battery Charging off
  1. Go to your iPhone smartphone's settings
  2. Tap on Battery
  3. Tap on Battery Health
  4. Turn Optimized Battery Charging off

Device Bluetooth

Your Dexcom G7 app uses Bluetooth to connect with your transmitter. You must keep your smartphone’s Bluetooth turned on to get alerts and sensor readings. It is also good practice to delete old Dexcom G7 sensors and/or Dexcom G6 transmitters from your device’s Bluetooth list. (Note) Dexcom G7 sensors connect, send data, and disconnect every 5 minutes. The pairing in Bluetooth for your current Dexcom G7 sensor will likely say “not connected” and is expected.
How to turn Bluetooth on
  1. Go to iPhone Settings
  2. Find Bluetooth
  3. Turn it on
How to remove old sensors from Bluetooth connections
Before inserting a new sensor, remove old sensors from your phone's list of Bluetooth connections. There may be more than one sensor listed because your phone saves each sensor as a new device in the Bluetooth connections list.
  1. Go to iPhone’s Settings > Bluetooth
  2. Find your used sensor in the list of devices
    Tips:a. Bluetooth shows all sensors as Not Connected
    b. All Dexcom G7 Dexcom sensor names start with DXCM
  3. Tap i to see details about the connection
  4. Tap Forget This Device
Apple requires you to give the Dexcom G7 app permission to use Bluetooth. You must keep the Bluetooth Permission turned on for the Dexcom G7 app to work.
How to turn Bluetooth Permission on
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap on Dexcom G7
  3. Turn Bluetooth on

Notifications Permission

Notifications let you get alerts on your smartphone. If notifications for the Dexcom G7 app are off, you won’t get any alerts. Allow notifications for the Dexcom G7 app to work. On iOS 15 and above, do not add the Dexcom G7 app to Scheduled Summary.
How to turn Notifications on
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings
  2. Tap Dexcom G7
  3. Tap Notifications
  4. Turn on Notifications

Critical Alerts

Critical Alerts should always play a sound and appear on your lock screen when your smartphone notifications are off, muted, or on Do Not Disturb. Critical Alerts include Urgent Low Soon and Sensor Failure.
How to turn Critical Alerts on
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings
  2. Tap Dexcom G7
  3. Tap Notifications
  4. Turn on Allow Critical Alerts
StandBy Mode
In iOS 17 and above, Standby Mode may prevent you from receiving Dexcom G7 App notifications. To continue to receive G7 notifications:
  • Don’t use StandBy Mode, or
  • Turn on Notifications for StandBy Mode.
How do I turn on Notifications for StandBy Mode?
  1. Go to phone Settings
  2. Tap StandBy
  3. Under Notifications, turn on Show Notifications
Assistive Access Mode
In iOS 17 and above, Assistive Access Mode may impact the G7 app’s performance. We do not recommend using Assistive Access Mode.
How do I turn off Assistive Access Mode?
  1. Triple-click the side button (on an iPhone with Face ID) or the Home button (for other iPhone models)
  2. Tap Exit Assistive Mode
  3. Enter the Assistive Access passcode

Reduce Interruptions Mode

Reduced Interruptions mode lets you allow notifications from apps you select, and blocks notifications from the rest. Dexcom G7 app will send critical alerts in Reduced Interruptions mode, but all other Dexcom notifications will not be sent. Reduced Interruptions was introduced with iOS18.
How to receive Dexcom G7 notifications while in Reduce Interruptions Mode?
  1. Open phone Settings
  2. Find Focus setting
  3. Tap the plus icon at the top right corner
  4. Under Allowed Notifications add the Dexcom G7 app

Locked Apps

Locked Apps hides the content of notifications. To see the full notification, unlock your phone. Locked Apps was introduced in iOS 18.
How do you unlock your Dexcom G7 app?
  1. Long press on the Dexcom G7 app
  2. Select Don’t require Face ID option.

Hidden Apps

Hidden Apps stops notifications and alerts. To get notifications and hear alerts, remove the app from Hidden Apps. Hidden Apps was introduced in iOS 18.
How to unhide your Dexcom G7 app?
  1. Find the Dexcom G7 app in Hidden Apps folder
  2. Long press on the Dexcom app
  3. Select don’t require Face ID option
Note: Hidden Apps removes the app from the home screen, even if you take the app out of Hidden Apps. Follow your phone’s instructions to add it back.
