What are the recommended Dexcom G7 Android smartphone settings?

Your smartphone settings can prevent the Dexcom G7 app from working optimally. Your smartphone settings may prevent notifications or may override alert volumes or functions. Learn more about the settings we recommend and how to check them.
The location of each setting may be different based on your Android OS version. Please refer to your smart device’s instructions for detailed information.* Not sure which Android OS version you’re on? Find your device’s OS version within the About section of your smartphone’s Settings.
Focus Mode
Focus Mode disables apps when it is on. Using Focus Mode with the Dexcom G7 app may prevent you from getting sensor readings and alerts.
How to turn Focus Mode off
- Go to your Android smartphone’s Settings
- Find Digital Wellbeing
- Turn off Focus Mode, or confirm that the Dexcom G7 app is not on the Distracting Apps list
App Pause
The App Pause setting temporarily disables apps. Using App Pause with the Dexcom G7 app stops all alerts and sensor readings.
How to exit App Pause
- Long press the Dexcom G7 app icon on the desktop or in the app drawer
- Tap the pause button to edit App Pause
Battery Saver Mode
Battery Saver Mode disables the background data. When it is on, your alerts may be delayed. If you’re using the Share feature of your Dexcom G7 app, information sent to designated followers using the Dexcom Follow app†,‡ may also be delayed.
How to turn Battery Saver Mode off
- Go to your Android smartphone’s Settings
- Tap Battery and Device care
- Tap Battery
- Turn off Battery Saver Mode, or choose the highest battery performance available
Adaptive Battery
The adaptive battery setting can sometimes prevent the Dexcom G7 app from running in the background when you don't have the app open and displayed. If the Dexcom G7 app is not running in the background, you won't get alerts.
How to turn Adaptive Battery off
- Go to your Android smartphone's settings
- Tap Battery and Device care
- Tap Battery
- Tap More battery settings
- Turn Adaptive Battery off
Battery Optimizing
Battery Optimizing prevents the Dexcom G7 app from running in the background when you don’t have the app open and displayed on your smartphone screen. When it is on for the app, your alerts may be delayed. If you’re using the Share feature of your Dexcom G7 app, information sent to designated followers using the Dexcom Follow app†,‡ may also be delayed. Turn off Battery Optimizing for the app.
How to turn Battery Optimizing off
- Go to your Android smartphone’s Settings
- Tap Apps
- Tap the 3 vertical dots on the top right side of the screen
- Choose Special Access
- Tap Battery Optimization
- Tap the filter and select All
- Find the Dexcom G7 app
- Turn It off for the Dexcom G7 app
Optimized Battery Charging
The optimized battery charging setting can cause apps to shut down during the time that the phone Is charging. When the Dexcom G7 app Is shut down, you will not get any notifications or alerts.
How to turn Optimized Battery Charging off
- Go to your Android smartphone's settings
- Tap Battery
- Tap Battery Health
- Turn Optimized Battery Charging off
Device Bluetooth
The Dexcom G7 app uses Bluetooth to connect with your sensor. You must keep your device’s Bluetooth turned on to get sensor readings and alerts. It is also good practice to delete old Dexcom G7 sensors from your device’s Bluetooth list. Note: Dexcom G7 sensors connect, send data, and disconnect every 5 minutes. The pairing in Bluetooth for your current Dexcom G7 sensor will likely say “not connected” and is expected.
How to turn Bluetooth on
Go to your Android smartphone’s Settings, find Bluetooth, and turn it on.
How to remove an old sensor from your smartphone’s Bluetooth connections
Before inserting a new sensor, remove old sensors from your phone's list of Bluetooth connections. There may be more than one sensor listed because your phone saves each sensor as a new device in the Bluetooth connections list.
- Go to your Android smartphone settings > Bluetooth
- Find your used sensor in the list of paired devices
- Tip: All Dexcom G7 sensor names start with DXCM
- Tap Settings to see details about the connection
- Tap Unpair
Location
Location must be turned on to use Bluetooth. Android requires you to give the Dexcom G7 app location permission all the time to use Bluetooth. If you don’t, you won’t get alerts or sensor readings. Dexcom does not use this permission to track your location.
How to turn Location Permission on
- Go to your Android smartphone’s settings
- Confirm device Location is on
- Find Dexcom G7 in Apps
- Tap Location Permission
- Tap Allow All the Time
Nearby Device Permission
On Android 12 and above, you must allow Nearby Device Permission for the Dexcom G7 app to work. This permission is needed for the app to access your smartphone’s Bluetooth.
How to turn Nearby Device Permission on
- Go to your Android smartphone’s settings
- Find Dexcom G7 in Apps
- Tap Notification
- Turn on Notification
Notifications Permission
Notifications allow you to receive alerts on your smartphone. If notifications for the Dexcom G7 app are off, you won’t get alerts.
How to turn Notifications on
- Go to Android smartphone’s settings
- Choose Dexcom G7
- Turn Notifications on.
Background Restrictions
Background Restrictions prevent the Dexcom G7 app from running in the background when you don’t have the app open and displayed on your smartphone screen. When it is on for the app, you won’t get alerts and sensor readings while the app is running in the background. Turn off Background Restrictions for the app.
How to turn Background Restrictions off
- Go to your Android smartphone’s settings
- Tap on Battery and Device care
- Tap on Background usage limits
- Turn "unused apps to sleep" off
Do Not Disturb (DND) Permission
The Do Not Disturb Permission ensures you get important Dexcom G7 alerts, like the Urgent Low Soon alert, even when you put your smartphone in the most restrictive Do Not Disturb mode. You must allow the Do Not Disturb Permission for the app to work.
How to turn the DND Permission on
Follow the in-app instructions or
- Go to your Android smartphone’s Settings
- Find DND Permission or DND Access,
- Choose the Dexcom G7,
- Tap Allow DND
- Tap Allow
Private Spaces
When an app is in the Private Spaces folder it will not send notifications or alerts. Private Spaces lets a user put an app in a folder that shuts the app off. After you move the Dexcom G7 app out of the Private Spaces folder you must log in and pair your sensor again. Private Spaces was introduced with Android 15.
How to take your Dexcom G7 app out of Private Spaces?
- Open apps and scroll down to Private Spaces.
- Uninstall Dexcom G7 app
- Install Dexcom G7 app on phone but not in Private Spaces
