Diabetes discussions: caring for kids with CGM

Doctor discussing CGM for kids with type 1 diabetes
Parents of children who have diabetes want them to enjoy school and activities without worry. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology can give more freedom back to both the parents and children, ensuring a diabetes diagnosis doesn’t hold them back.
Nurse practitioner Kacie Doyle-Delgado and mother of two boys with type 1 diabetes Cara Van Brocklin discuss the added peace of mind a CGM can bring. Cara said the Dexcom CGM and Follow app* help her monitor her kids’ glucose levels throughout the night, at school and even at practice.
“I would be terrified to send them to school without it,” she said. “We have the arrow system where it tells us if they’re going high, if they’re steady, if they’re dropping low or having an urgent low. As a parent to two boys with type 1, my advice is to get them on a CGM. It will literally change your life and their life.”
Kacie, who was diagnosed with type 1 as a child, has a passion for treating children and adults with diabetes. “I think that parents can be so fearful at first when you’re entering this brand-new world,” Kacie said. “And you’ve never had to deal with this, and all the thoughts and decision-making that people with diabetes have to deal with every day. CGM helps you to make those decisions with so much more confidence, because you can see where you’re at right now, and then where you’re heading with those arrow trends.”
