Diabetes in pregnancy

A woman uses Dexcom CGM during pregnancy

Supporting you at every stage

Growing a tiny human can be exhausting. But thanks to our continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, your diabetes management doesn’t need to be. We’re proud to be trusted to look after parents with diabetes every step of the way.
Most importantly, you can go into pregnancy with the confidence that you’re doing the very best for you and your baby.
Taking care of your diabetes is even more important in pregnancy. Managing glucose levels is essential during pregnancy, especially as hormonal changes can make it more challenging.

"But, once I got the hang of it, I found it liberating. I think it's that release of that stress and worry, knowing that actually you can see what your glucose is doing."

Managing diabetes during pregnancy

By your side, every step of the way

Managing diabetes during pregnancy is a significant task. Whether you have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, or you were diagnosed before becoming pregnant, Dexcom is ready to support you.
Planning and conception
Before you conceive, it’s important to aim for HbA1c below 48 mmol/mol (6.5%).2

no finger pricks*

With continuous readings straight to your smart device, you don’t have to remember to finger prick.*
1st Trimester
During pregnancy, especially in the first trimester (the initial 12 weeks), it’s important to be aware of low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). The usual symptoms of hypoglycaemia (such as dizziness, irritability, and headache) may all be less noticeable than before – meaning you will need to take extra steps to prevent levels from remaining too low.
customisable alerts icon

customisable alerts that fit to you

All our systems offer customisable alerts designed to warn you when your glucose is going high or low – for the unpredictable changes that pregnancy can bring. They work 24/7 too – helping you to stay in range longer and get a good night’s sleep when you need it most.
Urgent low soon icon

Our predictive ‘Urgent Low Soon’ alert warns you up to 20 minutes before a serious low – giving you time to take action to avoid it.
2nd and 3rd Trimester
Around the 12th week of pregnancy, it’s important to maintain good glucose levels to ensure the baby receives enough energy for proper growth and development.
Share data with loved ones icon

share data with loved ones

Dexcom CGM systems let you share your readings and alerts with up to 10 people using the Dexcom Follow app§ – giving your partner and loved ones the opportunity to support you.
care team informed icon

keep your care team informed

The Dexcom Clarity app helps make managing your diabetes data simple. It also helps keep your pregnancy care team informed allowing for better support and adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.
Birth and beyond
Once your baby is born, post-pregnancy hormones will likely continue to affect your glucose levels making it essential to manage it effectively. Some parents with diabetes may be taking two or three times as much insulin as they did at the start of their pregnancy to compensate for high blood sugar.

simplicity and flexibility when you need it most

When you use your CGM, you can focus more on caring for your baby, and less on checking your glucose levels.

You could be eligible for HCL on the NHS

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have guidelines on funding CGM for people living with type 1 diabetes and some people living with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes.
Your diabetes healthcare team will have their own local policy in line with NICE guidelines.2
Why not ask at your next appointment what this could mean for you?
More recently, hybrid closed loop (HCL) systems have also been made available for reimbursement for many people with type 1 diabetes.
