What does it mean to have prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a condition that a person has prior to developing type 2 diabetes. It means that blood sugar levels are higher than the normal range, but not yet high enough to be defined as diabetes. There are no clear symptoms that indicate prediabetes; however, the following test results of HbA1C, fasting blood glucose (FPG), and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) show prediabetes:
- HbA1C of 5.7% – 6.4%
- FBG of 5.6 – 6.9 mmol/L
- OGTT 2-hour blood glucose of 7.8 – 11.1 mmol/L
