Having diabetes isn’t something I’ll offer up in a discussion, not because I don’t want people to know about it, but because it doesn’t define me. It’s a whole different story when I know that sharing my story can help other people, especially kids. I tell them they can become whatever they want, whoever they want whether it’s a doctor, a firefighter or a football player.
In 2007 when I was playing football for Michigan State, I’ll never forget a letter I received from a 13-year-old boy who had diabetes. He told me I was his hero because I played his favorite sport and I had diabetes. I kept that letter in my locker room throughout college and I still have it to look back and reflect on the impact I have made as a T1D advocate.
When I found out about Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) three years ago, I knew I had to have it right away. Using the Dexcom CGM System helps me have better control of my glucose levels. People with diabetes know that we’re the ones in charge of our health. We do what we have to do, and that’s why I started using the Dexcom CGM System.
